LM™LLLT Dry AMD Therapy

What is AMD?

Age related macula degeneration (AMD) is a progressive condition affecting the central part of the retina (& vision) and is the leading cause of sight loss in the developed world. This affects over 700,000 people in the UK.

Forms of AMD:

There are three forms of AMD

  • Dry - Accounts for the majority of cases and occurs when drusen (lumps of protein) build up in the layers of the retina.

  • Wet - A fast progressing form of AMD which leads to severe central vision loss caused by unstable new blood vessels “leaking” in-between retinal layers.

  • Geographic Atrophy (GA) - Also known as “late stage” when scarring at the macula causes permanent vision loss.

Photobiomodulation (PBM) Technology:

Dry AMD is a degenerative condition for which there is currently no cure. Recent research (Lightwave study) has shown that PBM therapy can help to maintain & potentially improve vision by to reducing drusen volume - this slows the progression of AMD &  therefore reduces the risk of it progressing to advanced stages. The LM™LLLT treatment is a unique light based photobiomodulation technology which exposes the eyes to LED lights of two different wavelengths which are designed to boost energy within retinal cells & reduce oxidative stress.

Description of the treatment:

LM™LLLT therapy is given by wearing two different light masks, each for under 10 minutes. You will need to attend the practice twice a week for 4 weeks consecutively in your first cycle & for 3 weeks consecutively in all cycles following. You will be asked to sit back & relax whilst wearing the masks & they can be worn with eyes open or closed. Once the cycle is complete we will then use our Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) to scan the eyes as well as other tests to monitor results.

Results of the treatment:

LM™LLLT therapy aims to slow down the progression of Dry AMD. The LightWave I study shows it can reduce central drusen volume, improve visual acuity & improve contrast sensitivity.

Key Points:

  • Fast (takes less than 30 minutes)

  • Non-invasive

  • Painless

  • Easy

  • Safe (no reported side effects)
